@Nedra So true–even for those of us in the social media space ourselves! This is one reason why I’m pumped for the upcoming Guatemala trip I just wrote about–it’s an opportunity to DO and to also learn while doing, to connect, and to interact for real change in a community.

I think sometimes people become so enamored with just the idea of change that they forget that they actually have to DO something to make it happen. So I would say taking action instead of just talking about it is a key step. Give people specifics on what they can do that’s within their comfort level and fits with the image of the type of person they want to be.

Mark Horvath (@hardlynormal) has often talked about similar incidents he’s seen like what Yoo describes.

I’m so glad you commented with ways to help others! Sometimes we get so bogged down in our work and our project, that looking outside that can be a challenge. Even if we don’t know how to help, asking “How can I/we help?” could make all the difference in the world.

One other thing that may help us build relationships is by helping others – RT their posts, send referrals their way, share their info with our network, leave a comment, submit it to our favorite social bookmarking sites, etc.

I’ve found that by being helpful, that ‘good karma’ we build up comes back in spades when we need something!
