Second, for those of us who work for good changes as a profession–or a vocation–your post reminds us of several things: 1) What we do always affects the lives of real, live human beings, not just populations, not just numbers; 2) People are moved to act by all sorts of things–including love–and we should not feel awkward to remind people about the power of love; 3) Stories tell truths and move people to act in ways that data cannot. We need both.
This makes me think of a quote from the French theologian Teilhard de Chardin, which I had on my bedroom wall as a teen (paraphrasing here): One day after we have mastered the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we will harness for God the power of love. Then for the second time in the history of the world, we will have discovered fire.
